Tips for Driving Safely Around Large Trucks in West Virginia

|

Overhead view of a major truck accident and a clean up crew.Trucks take goods from many areas of the U.S. to other areas so that we can make purchases in some of our favorite stores. However, even though we need the presence of commercial trucks in everything we do, the accidents that result from tractor-trailers can be extremely devastating in nature. Deaths stemming from large trucks actually rose to their highest in 2017 than they have in 29 years, which shows us that more preventative methods need to be taken to prevent West Virginia truck accidents, as well as everywhere else across the U.S.

Our West Virginia personal injury attorneys at Katz, Kantor, Stonestreet & Buckner understand how overwhelming it can be to become injured in or lose a loved one due to a serious truck accident. This is why we would like to show you some of the ways that these accidents can be prevented when passenger vehicle drivers take precautions around large motor vehicles.

Safety Tips to Prevent West Virginia Truck Accidents

Remember Blind Spots: You have probably heard of blind spots, which are areas on the sides of trucks and behind these large vehicles where a driver is unable to see you. Large commercial trucks have much larger blind spots than your traditional passenger vehicle, which is why you must always stay aware of where these spots are so that you do not cause a serious accident. These blind spots are about 20 feet in front of a truck and 30 feet behind it. You should always move ahead of the truck or slow down so that a truck driver is able to see you.

Safe Passing: Being careful when passing is especially important when you are in the presence of commercial trucks, as these vehicles cannot stop as quickly as your average vehicle. Truck drivers need time to react to a vehicle in front of them and brake accordingly with enough time. You should always be consistent in your speed while you are passing.

Allowing Time: Always use your turn signals when you are driving in the presence of large trucks, as it can give a driver more time to watch you maneuver to a new area of the road. Trucks take longer to slow down and you do not want your bumper struck by one of these large vehicles, as the damages could be quite more catastrophic than with other vehicles.

Following Distances: You want to retain a safe following distance of at least four seconds between your vehicle and that of a commercial truck. If you are tailgating a truck, they will likely not see you due to blind spots and this could end in a severe rear-end collision that could push your vehicle underneath their trailer.

Stay Focused: Whatever you do, always stay focused while you are driving, as distracted drivers risk the lives of everyone around them. Put the phone down, avoid using the GPS while you are driving, and never eat while you have your hands on the wheel. When trucks are merging or turning, you will not end up in an accident if you keep your focus on the road in front of you.
